Turok: Dinosaur Hunter review

I am not sure what went through my mind when I got Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for the Nintnedo 64.  But I did see the cover where some guy, probably Turok, grabbed a velciorapter by the neck and was about to stab it!  That imagery was so totally awesome that this game demanded it be bought and played!  Now, obviously this being a first-person shooter you couldn't do that unless you like being ripped apart to shreds...but I am getting ahead of myself.  So with that said, let's kill our way into Turok: Dinosaur Hunter.

So there's this tribe called the Fireseed and every generation they bestow the title of Turok to a person.  This Turok is charged with the task of protecting the barrier of Earth and the Lost Land, a land where time has no place and the wildlife has dinosaurs in it and rock guys and some other things that shouldn't belong there.  But our Turok has a pretty big task on his plate.  The evil overlord, Campaigner, is out to find the eight pieces of the Chronospector so he can destroy the barrier of Earth and Lost Land so Turok must find the pieces before Campainger can and stop his evil plan.

Now the controls here at the smoothest and the jumping mechanics in this are a bit of a pain to use, especially if you have to jump a lot of those tiny pillars, but the depth of gameplay is pretty good.  You can do a lot of things in this, obviously you can jump, you can swim and you can knife some guys to death.  Even the enemies are pretty awesome, as some of them are beamed to your position...like Star Trek! And you get fight some reptilian humans...like Star Trek!  And then some velcioraptors...like Jurassic Park!  Sure the controls are a bit much to get used to but the imagination displayed is simply awesome.

But my favorite part of Turok is the awesome weapons that you can use.  At first they seem to be normal weapons like a knife, a bow, a shotgun and an assault rifle.  But the farther you go, the more awesome the weapons get.  You start getting some powerful alien weaponry like a particle accelerator, a quad rocket launcher, the fabled Chronospector and my personal favorite, the fusion cannon.  It's like you shooting out atomic bombs onto your enemies which causes a great, massive explosion.  These weapons are the most fun weapons, in most of first-person shooters that I played.

This game may be crazy, but in it's craziness lies a whole lot of awesome in this game.  The plot is Crazy Awesome with time-travel and keys and evil villains with their evil plans.  The controls have a nice depth to them even if their smoothness is debatable.  The weapons are awesome in their audacity and power.  It may not be a great FPS per-se, but it is a whole lot of fun.

8/10

  1. I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who got a perverse sense of enjoyment out of this game. Anything involving dinosaurs and wanton violence automatically wins my love.

I will say that the sequel was a massive improvement in almost every way imaginable, though.
